When: July 15 – August 31, 2020
Where: Online and offline, at the headquarters of the Union of Romanian Architects, str. Jean Louis Calderon, no. 48, Bucharest.
The participants, together with mentors Oana Moșoiu and Delia Popa, were challenged to find playful and innovative educational solutions for children with limited internet access, using methods and processes typical of “design thinking” and “problem solving”. They were supported, in the research and implementation of the solutions found, by the project partners, Alumni TFR-EduConect, the organization of Teach for Romania graduates, in communities where the lack of internet and the need to continue studies by students is urgent and directly respects children’s rights. education, supporting them in reducing the educational gap during the period of isolation.
The collaboration we proposed between the students from the 2 fields, Education and Design, offers different approaches on the design profession, following a historical and conceptual thread of research and implementation of the outstanding industrial design for the history of Romanian design. It is about the project “Design of portable televisions” – study conducted by the Institute of Architecture “Ion Mincu”, the Institute of Fine Arts “Nicolae Grigorescu”, the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest, the Academy of Economic Studies for Electronic Enterprise by Ion Popa and members of the Design Studio DA (Design and Architecure), between 1976-77, whose prototypes were to be mass-produced before the devastating 1977 earthquake.
In the spirit of that project and of the unprecedented interdisciplinary approach at academic level, the young designers worked together approaching different, innovative perspectives, to which is added the close collaboration with young pedagogues, graduates of the Teach for Romania educational program, with interventions in disadvantaged communities.
